Evidence based design, or design with a scientific basis, is an essential way to build consensus on a design, especially with large-scale development projects. It is quite difficult to rely on the landscape architect’s personal preferences and tastes to bring everyone on board to agree to a single proposal in a short period of time when there are multiple clients and operators, as well as a number of architects and designers participating in the project. Evidence-based design is being tried in many ways, for example, selection of tree species may be based on light or wind simulations, and the size of a plaza or pathway may be grounded on the pedestrian traffic flow during rush hour or high traffic periods. Monitoring data after completion of the construction is then used to improve accuracy further.
