While it is important to create a sort of symbolism or sense of spatial unity in landscape design, it is also essential to design ways to produce a sense of affinity which can bring enjoyment to the residents. This may be achieved by having large spaces and small spaces sometimes come to the fore and other times retreat to the background to form a continuing series of sceneries. Such design requires that there is no single point where everything is visible but that sceneries be folded into various spots, set up in a way so that people can sense the stories being told when moving through the spaces. One could argue that Japan’s traditional Chisen Kaiyu-style gardens, designed with strolling pathways around a central pond, are a perfect embodiment of such “sequence” design.
