Compared to designing the building itself, designing external space does not have as many clear requirements on functions or conditions from the clients, or legal restrictions and/or structural conditions with which to comply. Usually, the requirements are limited to turnarounds, parking capacity, evacuation routes, firefighting access, open space ratios, and green coverage. Nevertheless, expectations for landscape design from the clients may be vague in expression but quite high and earnest, expressed in phrases such as “guarantee a place for each person” or “offer comfort” or “provide memorable scenery.” For commercial purposes, what is needed above all is to create liveliness. As landscape architects, we must be resourceful in finding ways to create external spaces that are useful to and loved by people over the years.
